How to Make a Coloring Book for Amazon KDP (Step by Step)

Build a coloring-book draft by planning your scenes, generating and reviewing each illustration, and assembling your selected pages and cover. The examples on this site show work you can inspect; they are not evidence of an approved paperback. Your final book still needs page-by-page quality checks and KDP preflight.

Step 1: Pick a niche that sells

Animals, mandalas and seasonal themes are the proven KDP coloring niches. Check Amazon best-seller lists for your idea — you want steady demand without a sea of identical books.

Step 2: Choose a character reference

Choose a character reference and list the features you want to preserve. Use it as a visual guide for later scenes, then compare every result: a reference can help, but does not guarantee identical details.

Inspect the archived illustrations in “Puppy's Big Day” and compare the puppy across ten images. Details vary; the gallery is not a controlled test of character-reference performance or proof of a complete book.

Step 3: Generate and review your interior pages

Plan one scene per illustration, generate each page and review it before adding it to your draft. Check for clear black outlines on white, unwanted shading and details that would be difficult to color.

Step 4: Design the wrap-around cover

KDP needs one continuous PDF: back cover + spine + front cover, with the spine width calculated from your page count and paper type (about 0.002252 inches per white-paper page).

The cover wizard helps assemble a wrap-around cover. Review its settings and exported draft against the current KDP template before uploading.

Step 5: Export draft files and run preflight

Assemble selected pages in Book Studio and export draft interior and cover files. Check the final trim size, effective image resolution, margins, bleed and page count against current KDP requirements. An exported PDF still needs preflight and visual review.

Step 6: Publish and market your book

Upload both PDFs on kdp.amazon.com, write a keyword-rich title and description, and price between $6.99–$9.99 to start. Note: KDP requires at least 24 interior pages for a paperback.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to make a coloring book?

The KDP page preset currently costs 12 credits per generation. Character candidates, cover artwork and retries use additional credits shown in the product. There is no verified fixed cost or completion time for a finished book; calculate your own total before generating the full set.

Do I need to know how to draw?

No. You describe the character and the scenes in plain English; the generator produces clean black-and-white line art. Your job is choosing a niche, writing good scene ideas, and quality-checking the pages.

How many pages should a KDP coloring book have?

Amazon KDP requires a minimum of 24 pages for paperbacks. Most successful coloring books run 30–50 interior pages, often with each illustration on the right-hand page and the back left blank to prevent bleed-through.

Can I sell AI-generated coloring books on Amazon KDP?

Yes. Amazon requires you to disclose AI-generated content during the publishing flow, and you remain responsible for the quality and rights. Paid plans include commercial use of the content you generate. The Free plan is for personal use only. You own the content you generate, and the selected model provider’s terms may impose additional restrictions. See our Terms of Service. A paid plan means a paid subscription. Buying credit packs alone does not count as a paid plan; if you only buy credit packs, the Free plan rules apply. These rules apply only to content generated on or after the effective date of the updated Terms of Service. Content generated before that date is not affected. The plan you have when you submit a generation request decides which rules apply to it. Content generated while you had a paid plan can still be used commercially after your subscription ends, and so can content generated with credit packs bought before the effective date.

What are low content books?

Low content books (coloring books, journals, planners, puzzle books) are KDP books that are light on text and heavy on layout — a popular entry point for self-publishers because production is fast and repeatable.

What size should a coloring book be?

8.5×11 inches (US Letter) is the dominant trim size for coloring books — big pages are easier to color. Square 8.5×8.5 is a popular alternative for kids books.
