AI Book Cover Generator: Your Book, Your Cover Draft

Start with your book title, author and cover idea. This tool prepares a paperback wrap draft: back, spine and front in one PDF. Review your text, artwork and print settings before publishing.

Choose the output you need

Paperback wrap draft: use the wizard below with your trim size, paper type and final interior page count.

Cover artwork or reference editing: create a single image or edit permitted references. An image alone is not a complete paperback wrap.

Dimensions before artwork: calculate the wrap dimensions without generating art.

Sign in and check your balance and the displayed cost before submitting. Each additional generation consumes credits.

💡 This is the full wrap-around cover — back, spine and front in one draft PDF. Spine width is computed from your page count and paper type, title and author use a fixed text layout, and you can upload an official KDP template to take the real dimensions straight off it.

We use these to calculate your spine width and full cover size automatically.

Title & text

Your title is laid over the art as crisp, sharp type — not baked into the image.

4K, text-free — your title is added on top automatically. ~30–60s.

Plykit builds a wrap-around cover draft from your own idea, title, author, trim size and page count. Default GPT Image 2 art costs 18 credits; sign-in is required. Eligible new users receive 20 starter credits in total, enough for one default art generation if unused. PDF construction is not publishing approval.

Does the AI spell the title and author name correctly?

Your title and author are drawn as a separate text overlay from what you type. They are not generated inside the artwork, and the tool does not silently rewrite or spell-check them. You can edit them around the existing art without another generation.

Proofread your input and inspect wrapping, font coverage and contrast. A missing glyph or a clipped line still needs correction before you use the exported draft.

Actual Canvas/PDF output from our September 26 QA fixture, using existing demo art. Typed title: “The Library Lantern—Draft”; author: “QA Author”. This demonstrates text placement, not a new AI image or a customer publication. The source art was about 91 effective ppi in this draft, below print target; it is not a print-approved cover.

4. Typography & Text Placement

Text-Free Cover Art

  • Art is requested without text; your title and author are overlaid afterwards in the fixed layout shown in the preview
  • Leave clear space at top third for title and bottom for author name
  • Avoid complex details where text will be placed
  • Dark areas or gradients at top/bottom create natural text backgrounds

Genre Typography Rules

  • Romance: elegant serif or script fonts (Playfair Display, Cormorant)
  • Thriller: bold, condensed sans-serif (Bebas Neue, Oswald)
  • Fantasy: decorative or serif with flourishes (Cinzel, EB Garamond)
  • Non-fiction: clean, authoritative sans-serif (Montserrat, Lato)

Thumbnail Readability

  • Title must be readable at Amazon thumbnail size (~120px wide)
  • Use high contrast between text and background
  • Maximum 2 fonts per cover (title + author name)
  • Test your cover at 50% and 25% size — if you cannot read the title, increase font size

5. Publishing Workflow

📝 Step 1: Research Your Genre

Browse Amazon bestsellers in your genre. Note the visual patterns — color palettes, imagery types, typography styles. Your cover must fit the genre while standing out.

Pro tip: Look at the top 20 books in your specific subcategory. Your cover should feel like it belongs among them.

🎨 Step 2: Generate Cover Art

Describe your own book and start with one cover draft. Review the composition before deciding whether another paid generation is needed.

Pro tip: Generate at 4K resolution. Use "no text, portrait 2:3 ratio" in every prompt for clean, typography-ready output.

✍️ Step 3: Add Typography

Enter your title and author. The wizard overlays text in its fixed layout. Proofread the text and inspect wrapping, cropping and contrast in the preview.

Pro tip: Use two fonts at most — one for the title, one for the author. KDP only prints text on the spine above 79 pages, so below that keep the spine clean.

📤 Step 4: Export & Check

Build the wrap-around draft PDF. Compare it against the current printer template, inspect text and cropping, then use the platform Previewer and a proof copy. No platform approval is implied.

Pro tip: KDP Cover Creator is free but limited. For print, use KDP's Cover Calculator to get exact dimensions including spine width.

7. Frequently Asked Questions

Does the AI spell the title and author name correctly?

The tool places the title and author you type as a separate Canvas text overlay, rather than asking the image model to draw those words. It does not correct your spelling. Check the preview for typos, missing font glyphs, wrapping and contrast before exporting the draft PDF.

What does this tool deliver?

A wrap-around cover draft: back, spine and front on one PDF page. It does not generate the interior or approve a book for publication. Use your actual interior page count and paper settings.

How are my title and author added?

The illustration is requested without text. Your title and author use deterministic overlays in the fixed layout shown in the preview; inspect wrapping, cropping and readability before exporting.

Is it free to try?

Sign-in is required. Eligible new accounts receive 20 starter credits in total, including the signup grant. Default GPT Image 2 cover art costs 18 credits per generation, so 20 unused credits cover one default generation. Other existing art models show their own costs. Editing text and building the draft PDF do not generate new art.

Is the PDF ready for publication?

It is a draft on a 300 DPI output canvas. Check the actual source resolution, current printer template, trim, paper, interior page count, bleed, text and Previewer, then inspect a proof copy. Plykit does not guarantee platform approval.

Can I use the art commercially?

Check the applicable model terms, your input rights and the publishing platform requirements for your intended use. A generated draft is not a rights clearance or acceptance decision.

Can I make an ebook or audiobook cover here?

This workflow exports a paperback wrap draft. Ebook and audiobook artwork has different requirements; check your distributor specifications and prepare those files separately.

Can I keep editing without generating again?

Yes. Change the title, author, background and dimensions around the current art. A new art generation only starts when you click its generation button and consumes the displayed credits.
